Tesla has launched a referral program for Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in the United States and, at the same time, ended its long-running vehicle referral rewards there.
How it works
- Who can refer: owners with an active FSD (Supervised) subscription or a purchased FSD package. People who got FSD through a one-year grant are not eligible.
- App version: referral links need Tesla app 4.62.0 or later.
- What the friend gets: a one-month FSD (Supervised) trial, if eligible. Unlike the old car program, referrals can go to existing Tesla owners, not just first-time buyers.
- What the referrer gets: if the friend subscribes during the trial, subscribers earn one free month of FSD, and owners who bought FSD outright get a $99 Tesla Credit instead. Rewards are capped at 12 per calendar year.
Why it matters
The change shifts referrals from selling cars to selling software. Tesla said on its third-quarter call that it has about 1.74 million FSD subscribers and that 75% of new vehicle orders in North America include a paid subscription. The previous vehicle program, which offered buyers up to $250 in credits and three months of free FSD, is no longer available in the U.S. The new program is U.S.-only for now, even as FSD (Supervised) wins approvals abroad in countries such as Slovakia.
