Italy says it supports a swift European Union approval of Tesla Assisted Driving, the name Tesla now uses in Europe for FSD (Supervised). Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini posted the news on X on October 29 after what he called a “very positive and constructive conversation” with Elon Musk. Musk replied: “Much appreciated. Thank you!”
Support, not approval
Salvini’s statement backs the EU-wide process. It is not a national approval: Tesla’s application is still under review at Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, so the feature is not yet available on Italian roads.
Where the EU process stands
- April 2026: the Dutch regulator RDW issued the first EU approval, which other member states can recognize nationally.
- 10 countries so far: the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia, Czechia, Croatia, Slovakia and Latvia, which joined on October 26.
- The bar: EU-wide approval needs a qualified majority in the Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles, at least 15 member states representing 65% of the EU population.
- Germany said earlier in October that it backs swift approval after agreeing conditions with Tesla.
- Timing: a vote is expected no earlier than December.
Why it matters
Italy has about 59 million people, roughly 13% of the EU total, so its vote carries real weight toward the population threshold, especially alongside Germany. Not a Tesla App expects any EU approval to cover HW4 vehicles only.
