Open Source For You reported in August 2026 on the program for Percona Live Amsterdam. Percona describes it as the largest independent open source database conference. It was scheduled for September 9-11, 2026, with more than 50 presentations.
Who is speaking and about what
The conference covers MySQL, PostgreSQL, Valkey, MongoDB and MariaDB. The common thread is how big companies actually run these databases. Speakers come from Booking.com, BigBasket, BBVA, Careem, Mastercard, Nomura, Oracle, SUSE, Wise and Yandex Cloud. Their talks cover:
- database pipelines and MySQL fleet management
- MongoDB optimisation
- data models written with AI help
- isolation in Valkey, the open source fork of Redis
- database migration
- data sovereignty and resilience across multiple regions
There is also a strong community track. It includes the OurSQL Foundation, MySQL community projects, PostgreSQL ahead of its expected version 19 release, MyVector, MyDumper, OpenEverest, BuildDevCon and Comunidade MySQL Brazil.
Licensing and sovereignty
Percona CEO Peter Farkas was set to talk about open source licensing. He said: “Database teams have to deal with issues like sovereignty, resilience and with regulation affecting their working processes, while still delivering the performance and security that their organisations expect around their data.” The event pitches open source database infrastructure as a way for companies to keep control of their own data and avoid vendor lock-in.
Why it matters to Linux admins
Most of these databases run on Linux, and the people who keep them running are usually the same people who patch the OS. Here are some takeaways even if you didn’t attend:
- Valkey is now mainstream. If you still run Redis out of habit, Valkey is the community fork, and Fedora, Debian and EPEL now package it.
- MyDumper is worth a look for logical MySQL backups that are faster than
mysqldump, because it dumps and restores in parallel threads. - Watch PostgreSQL’s next major release. Plan major-version upgrades with
pg_upgradeor logical replication rather than a dump and restore on big clusters.
If you are building out PostgreSQL or MySQL on AlmaLinux, our how-to series cover PostgreSQL streaming replication and failover and promoting a MySQL replica.
