Tesla Launches Unsupervised Robotaxi Rides in Fort Worth With a 143-Square-Mile Zone

Tesla’s Robotaxi service is now running in Fort Worth, Texas. The official Robotaxi account announced late Sunday that rides would start at 6 a.m. CT on Monday, November 2, and, as in Tesla’s other Texas cities, there’s no safety monitor in the car.

The service area

Not a Tesla App measures the Fort Worth geofence at about 143 square miles. It’s centered on downtown and reaches west to White Settlement, south to Benbrook, north to Saginaw along I-35W past Loop 820, and east along Haltom City and Forest Hill. That makes it Tesla’s third-largest unsupervised zone, behind Austin (about 272 square miles) and Houston (about 254). The service starts with Model Y vehicles rather than Cybercabs.

A surprise city

  • Fort Worth wasn’t on any list of upcoming cities Tesla had shared. The most recent named targets were Las Vegas, Phoenix, Jacksonville and San Antonio.
  • It’s Tesla’s first new Robotaxi city in about three months, joining Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa as the seventh city with unsupervised rides.
  • Cybercab rides are expected to start in neighboring Dallas later this month, which could make Dallas-Fort Worth a major hub for the service.

Fleet context

Tesla’s Texas fleet keeps growing in the state’s automated-vehicle register. According to Teslant, the register listed 1,244 Tesla vehicles on the morning of November 2, 671 Model Ys and 573 Cybercabs, though it doesn’t show where each car operates.
