Musk Pledges One SpaceX Share to Every Child in America Next Year

Elon Musk said on Monday, October 19, 2026, that he will give one of his SpaceX shares to every child in America next year. “This will be the first of many,” he wrote in a post on X. He didn’t say how the shares would be distributed or who would qualify.

The numbers

CNBC puts the potential cost at about $10.5 billion, based on roughly 72 million US children under 18 (census data as of July 1, 2025) and SpaceX’s Friday closing price of $146.03. Musk owns about 4.8 billion SpaceX shares according to an August SEC filing, or 6.4 billion including unvested awards and options, a 48.4% beneficial stake.

How it started

The pledge came in reply to Anthropic, which announced on Sunday that it plans to commit 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund, subject to shareholder approval, with more added as its valuation grows. Musk responded that he recommends “giving the shares directly to the public.” Altimeter Capital’s Brad Gerstner, who founded Invest America, suggested on X that the shares could go out through Trump Accounts, though Musk hasn’t confirmed any mechanism. According to TipRanks, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and her husband announced a separate plan in July to donate shares to Trump Accounts for more than two million children aged 11 to 17.

Context

The timing is busy for the newly public company. SpaceX reports Q3 2026 results on October 20, and a block of about 328 million shares becomes eligible for sale on October 24 under its post-IPO lock-up schedule. CNBC also notes Musk has a mixed record on past philanthropic pledges, so the details will matter.
