SpaceX Readies Bandwagon-5 Rideshare With Second Starfall Reentry Capsule Test

SpaceX is preparing to launch its Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission on a Falcon 9 from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The hour-long window opens at 6:30 a.m. EDT (10:30 UTC) on Monday, October 19, 2026, and SpaceX lists October 20 as the backup.

What’s on board

The rocket carries 32 payloads. According to Spaceflight Now, 20 of the 31 customer payloads were manifested by Exolaunch, including four radio-frequency monitoring satellites from HawkEye 360, four satellites for Finnish company Iceye and six navigation satellites from Xona Space Systems. Portal Space Systems is also flying its first Starburst demonstration spacecraft, a 260 kg vehicle built to maneuver in orbit and carry customer payloads of up to 50 kg.

Starfall returns

The headline payload is SpaceX’s own Starfall reentry capsule, flying its second demonstration. Starfall debuted quietly in June, when SpaceX shared little more than a rendering. The FAA’s environmental assessment describes it as roughly 0.75 m tall and 3.1 m across, with a mass of about 2,100 kg and room for up to 1,000 kg of payload. SpaceX positions it as a microgravity lab for research and in-space manufacturing. SpaceX’s mission timeline shows Starfall deploying about 2 hours and 48 minutes after liftoff, well after the customer satellites. The company hasn’t said what, if anything, Starfall is carrying this time.

Starfall isn’t the only capsule coming home. Varda Space Industries is flying W-Series 7, which will test whether microgravity can improve the solubility of a PROTAC cancer-drug compound. Despite the name, it’s Varda’s ninth reentry capsule.

Booster and weather

First stage B1085 is making its 19th flight, with a landing planned on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas about nine minutes after liftoff. The 45th Weather Squadron gave a 55% chance of acceptable launch weather, citing gusty winds from a cold front, and flagged a moderate to high risk of poor conditions at the booster recovery area.

Why it matters

Rideshare flights keep orbit affordable for small operators, but the bigger story is reentry. With both SpaceX and Varda flying capsules designed to bring material back from orbit, in-space manufacturing is moving from one-off experiments toward a regular service. Separately, SpaceX is scheduled to report its Q3 2026 results on October 20.
